Trump Manhattan trial delayed until mid-April by judge

The judge set a hearing on March 25 to review Donald J. Trump’s request to postpone or dismiss the trial.

The criminal trial of Donald J. Trump in Manhattan has been delayed by a New York judge until at least mid-April, due to the recent disclosure of over 100,000 pages of records relevant to the case. This postponement, lasting 30 days from the judge’s decision, is the only one of Mr. Trump’s four criminal cases that seemed ready to go to trial.

Mr. Trump’s legal team requested a 90-day delay or dismissal of the trial based on the new records, while the Manhattan prosecutors suggested a 30-day postponement to allow for review of the documents. The prosecutors had accused the former president of concealing a sex scandal during and after his 2016 campaign.

Originally scheduled for March 25, the trial will now have a hearing on that day to address Mr. Trump’s motion to dismiss the case and determine if further delay is necessary. Judge Juan M. Merchan indicated that there are significant factual questions to be resolved, particularly regarding the timing of the record disclosure. He will set a new trial date after the upcoming hearing.

In a three-page order, the judge instructed both parties to provide a detailed timeline of events leading to the record disclosure and to share their communications with federal prosecutors who provided the documents. This includes letters, subpoenas, emails, notes, and messages related to the case.
