Chinese Magnate Confesses to Illegal Donations to New York Politicians

Chinese businessman Hui Qin gave illegal donations to Mayor Eric Adams and others, according to a source in a federal case.

In a recent development, a prominent Chinese businessman has pleaded guilty to federal charges for making straw donor contributions to political candidates, including a New York congressman and Mayor Eric Adams. Hui Qin, once listed as a billionaire by Forbes, operated the now-defunct SMI Culture entertainment business. He has been in federal custody since his arrest in the fall for using fake identification.

According to prosecutors, Qin solicited contributions for political campaigns and agreed to reimburse the donors in 2021 and 2022. The recipients of these donations reportedly included Representative Andrew Garbarino and former Cranston, R.I., Mayor Allan Fung, both Republicans, as well as Democratic Mayor Eric Adams. Qin concealed his activities from the officials, leading them to unknowingly file false reports.

U.S. Attorney Breon S. Peace of the Eastern District of New York stated that Qin had admitted to participating in a deceptive scheme that misled election authorities.

This case sheds light on the illegal practice of straw donor contributions in political campaigns, highlighting the importance of transparency and accountability in the electoral process. It serves as a reminder of the consequences of engaging in fraudulent activities to influence political outcomes.

The implications of Qin’s guilty plea extend beyond his personal actions, raising broader questions about the integrity of political fundraising and the need for stricter enforcement measures to prevent similar abuses in the future. As the legal proceedings continue, the public awaits further developments in this high-profile case.
