Renowned artist known for creating biblical statues at St. John the Divine Cathedral in Manhattan.
Simon Verity, a renowned British stone carver and artisan, passed away at the age of 79 at his home in Wales due to Lewy body dementia. Throughout his career, Verity left a lasting legacy with his impressive works of art, including the statues on the western facade of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Upper Manhattan.
In 1988, Verity was selected to oversee the St. John the Divine project, which became one of his most well-known achievements. Over the course of nine years, he and his team meticulously carved 31 biblical figures and scenes from limestone blocks on the cathedral’s facade. These intricate carvings, which include representations of Moses, Elijah, John the Baptist, Abraham, and Sarah, have become a major attraction for visitors to the cathedral.
One of the most striking carvings created by Verity depicts a modern interpretation of the burning of Jerusalem, showing the destruction of the World Trade Center and other city landmarks under a nuclear mushroom. This particular carving was completed more than a decade before the tragic events of September 11, 2001. In a symbolic gesture of rebirth, the carving also portrays stonemasons building on the city’s ashes, signifying hope and renewal.
The Very Rev. Patrick Malloy, dean of the cathedral, praised Verity’s work, stating that many tourists specifically visit the cathedral to admire the intricate carvings on the facade. He emphasized that Verity’s ability to bring ancient religious figures to life through his craftsmanship has left a lasting impact on present-day viewers and will continue to be appreciated by future generations.
In addition to his work on the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Verity’s artistic contributions extended to various other projects, including grottoes, tombstones, fountains, and floor inscriptions. One notable example is the brass lettering he created for the shrine to Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral, showcasing his versatility and skill as a stone carver.
