The New York City Marathon witnessed an outstanding performance by Daniel Romanchuk and Susannah Scaroni in the men’s and women’s wheelchair divisions, respectively. Romanchuk clinched his third victory in the race, while Scaroni secured her second win in dominating fashion.
Romanchuk, aged 26, crossed the finish line in Central Park in 1:36:31, claiming a 5-second lead over his competitors. On the other hand, Scaroni finished with a winning time of 1:48:05, a remarkable 11-minute lead over the five-time champion Tatyana McFadden.
The men’s race was intense in the initial stages, with Romanchuk, David Weir from Britain, and Tomoki Suzuki from Japan battling for position alongside the defending champion, Marcel Hug from Switzerland. However, Hug, who had an impressive record from the previous year, struggled during the race due to illness, allowing Romanchuk to surge ahead and claim victory.
In contrast, the women’s race was a one-sided affair, with Scaroni dominating from the beginning. She maintained a significant lead over her competitors throughout the race, eventually finishing with a comfortable margin over McFadden and Manuela Schär from Switzerland.
Both Romanchuk and Scaroni will receive a prize of $35,000 for their exceptional performances in the marathon. Their victories mark another successful year for these talented athletes in the world of wheelchair racing.
