Mauro Marroncelli, approaching 40, was determined to get his hands on a Crown Victoria taxi.
The story of one of New York City’s oldest taxis, which retired after logging over 550,000 miles, has taken an unexpected turn. After its retirement in April, the taxi was purchased by a tech industry project manager in Milan, Italy, for $7,000. The new owner, Mauro Marroncelli, plans to keep the iconic yellow paint job and taxi symbol, maintaining the vehicle’s original appearance. However, the taxi will now serve as a “weekend car” in Italy, with the meter removed, making it a unique sight on the streets of Milan.
The 2011 Ford Crown Victoria taxi made its journey to Italy on a container ship, adding another 4,000 miles to its odometer. Marroncelli, 38, expressed that while some may view his purchase as unconventional, he sees it as a unique opportunity, especially as he nears his 40s. He aims to preserve the taxi’s nostalgic charm while giving it a new lease on life in a different country.
The taxi’s old medallion number, 6D76, will be reinstated on the light atop the roof, paying homage to its history in New York City. Marroncelli’s decision to acquire the retired taxi highlights the vehicle’s enduring appeal and the sentimental value it holds for both locals and enthusiasts alike. With its distinctive features and storied past, the taxi’s relocation to Italy marks a new chapter in its remarkable journey.
