Bronx church event marks beginning of NYC 2025 mayoral race.
The first candidate forum for the New York City mayoral race saw Democrats criticizing Mayor Eric Adams for his record and the criminal charges he faces. The event, held at a church in the Bronx, highlighted Mr. Adams’s indictment on federal corruption charges, budget cuts to free preschool, stalled bus improvements, and his response to the city’s affordability crisis.
One of the primary challengers, city comptroller Brad Lander, criticized Mr. Adams for failing to fulfill his promises to communities and called for a safer, more affordable, and better-run city. The forum marked the unofficial start of the mayoral race leading up to the Democratic primary in June, with five Democrats, including Mr. Lander, vying to unseat Mr. Adams.
Organized by civil-rights leader and Pentecostal minister Kirsten John Foy, the forum aimed to kickstart the mayoral race, with candidates expected to ramp up their campaigns after the upcoming presidential election. While Mr. Adams did not attend the forum, his absence did not go unnoticed, with attendees expressing disappointment at his non-appearance.
