Meet the talented individuals who have made New York City their home and have carved out unique paths in the worlds of art, design, and writing.

At 71 years old, this multi-talented individual resides in the prestigious Gramercy Park neighborhood of Manhattan. With a background in art, interior design, and writing, their journey to New York City was inspired by a chance encounter with the legendary artist Andy Warhol during high school in Dallas. Upon expressing their intention to move to the city, Warhol encouraged them to reach out to him once they arrived. This connection led to a series of phone calls to Warhol’s famous studio, The Factory, where the artist personally answered each time. Reflecting on their early days in New York, they fondly remember the sense of community among artists, likening it to a supportive network akin to Jewish mothers.

One of the most memorable experiences in their career was working as a delivery truck driver for florists in New York City in the 1970s. They had the unique opportunity to decorate the Christmas tree of the iconic actress Lauren Bacall, who lived in the same building as the florist they worked for. This unconventional job allowed them to navigate the city streets and interact with a diverse range of individuals, adding a touch of whimsy to their artistic journey.

A fellow artist, aged 53, calls the vibrant neighborhood of Clinton Hill in Brooklyn home. Their artistic journey began in childhood when they started noticing surreal images in the world around them. From seeing faces in unexpected places to finding artistic inspiration in the wood paneling of their Southern California home, their unique perspective on the world laid the foundation for their creative pursuits.

The artist’s distinctive aesthetic emerged when they embarked on the Narcissister project in 2006. Embracing the use of masks and merkins (pubic wigs), they crafted a persona that challenged traditional notions of beauty and identity. Drawing on their experience as a window display designer, they repurposed a wig display form into a mask, creating a striking visual identity for their artistic endeavors.

In the bustling metropolis of New York City, these individuals have found a platform to express their creativity and push boundaries in their respective fields. Their stories serve as a testament to the city’s enduring allure as a hub of artistic innovation and community support. Whether through chance encounters with iconic figures or the exploration of surreal imagery, these artists have found inspiration and fulfillment in the vibrant tapestry of New York City’s cultural landscape.
