Exciting Achievement: South Bronx Economic Hub Supported by Community Groups

Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice (YMPJ) in The Bronx has transformed an unused lot under the Bruckner Expressway into a public space called the Soundview Economic Hub. The space features art installations, vendors, and community activities. The project aims to revitalize the neighborhood and create more public spaces below the expressway. YMPJ is working on fundraising to expand the project further.

The Bronx community has recently witnessed the transformation of an unused lot under the Bruckner Expressway into a vibrant public space. Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice (YMPJ) have spearheaded the creation of the Soundview Economic Hub, a temporary plaza open daily from sunrise to sunset, providing a much-needed communal area in the neighborhood.

YMPJ, in collaboration with the Local Center and the Association for Neighborhood and Housing Development, secured the 7,500 square feet lot that had long been neglected. With a financial boost of $125,000, the space was adorned with art installations, vendors, and other amenities to enhance the community experience.

The initiative has been a long time in the making, with YMPJ’s Executive Director, David Shuffler, expressing his excitement at the project finally coming to fruition after years of effort. The launch event featured local vendors offering treats like guava lemonade and baked goods, as well as activities for children and art displays showcasing the essence of Bronx culture.

The plaza aims to be just the beginning of a larger vision to utilize a total of 30,000 square feet under the Bruckner Expressway for public spaces. With plans to raise $6 million for further revitalization, YMPJ is committed to transforming additional areas into welcoming and accessible community spaces.

The project has received positive feedback from local officials like City Councilmember Rafael Salamanca Jr., who highlighted the transformation of the space from neglect and illegal dumping to a thriving community hub. The development aligns with broader initiatives like the Hunts Point Access Improvement Project, which is focused on enhancing access to the Hunts Point Peninsula and improving the overall urban landscape.

As YMPJ continues its fundraising efforts and feasibility studies to expand the public space, the Soundview Economic Hub stands as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives in reimagining urban environments and fostering social connection.
