High school football coach dies in Bronx after being hit by a vehicle, one of three pedestrians killed in weekend traffic accidents.
In 2017, a tragic incident occurred at a Bronx intersection, injuring five individuals. A witness, Dwight Downer, expressed concerns about speeding drivers and the lack of regard for safety on the roads. Sadly, Mr. Downer, a respected football coach, lost his life in a collision at the same intersection where he had witnessed the previous crash.
The fatal accident occurred at the intersection of Eastchester Road and Givan Avenue, just yards away from Mr. Downer’s home in the Laconia neighborhood of the Bronx. As he was exiting his vehicle after midnight on a Saturday, a pickup truck and a BMW collided, causing the BMW to strike Mr. Downer and several parked cars. Despite being rushed to Jacobi Medical Center, Mr. Downer succumbed to his injuries.
Over the weekend of Mr. Downer’s passing, three pedestrians fell victim to reckless drivers, highlighting the dangers faced by pedestrians in New York City. This tragic event occurred during a year with a significant increase in pedestrian fatalities, with over 100 individuals losing their lives in traffic accidents, representing a nearly 13 percent rise compared to the previous year.
Mr. Downer, a father of two, dedicated his time to coaching youth football teams, including the Bronx Buccaneers and DeWitt Clinton High School, where he had once been a student. His untimely death shook the community and served as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible driving practices.
