Ingrid Lewis-Martin, a close aide to Mayor Eric Adams, was served with a federal subpoena and had her home searched upon returning from a vacation to Japan. The investigation is being conducted by the Southern District of New York, the same office that indicted Mayor Adams on corruption charges. Lewis-Martin’s lawyer stated that she will cooperate with the investigation and is not currently a target. Mayor Adams has faced a tumultuous period with resignations in his inner circle and ongoing legal challenges.
In a recent development, Ingrid Lewis-Martin, a close aide to Mayor Eric Adams, was served with a subpoena by federal authorities upon her return from a vacation in Japan. Her home in Brooklyn was also subject to a federal search warrant. Lewis-Martin’s lawyer confirmed that she was served a subpoena from the Southern District of New York and handed over her phones to the SDNY office in Manhattan. Although she is not the target of any known case, she has pledged to cooperate fully with the investigations.
Lewis-Martin returned from Japan with Jesse Hamilton, a longtime ally of Adams who serves as the deputy commissioner for real estate services within the Department of Citywide Administrative Services. It is uncertain if Hamilton also received a subpoena. This development comes amidst a challenging period for Mayor Adams, who recently pleaded not guilty to five corruption charges related to alleged acceptance of campaign donations and flight upgrades from Turkish nationals in exchange for favors. Despite the indictment, Adams has vowed to fight the charges and has no intention of resigning.
The raid on Lewis-Martin’s home follows similar actions taken against other members of Adams’ inner circle, including former NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Phil Banks, First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright, Schools Chancellor David Banks, and Tim Pearson, the mayor’s senior public safety advisor. The aftermath of these raids has seen resignations within the administration, including Caban and the mayor’s chief counsel Lisa Zornberg. Schools Chancellor Banks and Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan have also announced their plans to depart at the end of the year.
Lewis-Martin had been on vacation in Japan for the past two weeks and Mayor Adams, during a press conference, downplayed any speculations about her potential departure. He expressed support for her vacation and assured that everything was under control in her absence.
These recent events have caused turmoil within the Adams administration, with key officials facing legal challenges and resignations. The ongoing investigations and legal proceedings have cast a shadow over the mayor’s office and raised questions about the future direction of the administration.
