Several Firefighters Work In A Dark, Wooded Area With Embers And Flames Burning The Surrounding Landscape.

Inwood Hill Park Manhattan Brush Fire Contained

Recent brush fires in Brooklyn, the Bronx, New Jersey, and at the northern tip of Manhattan’s park prompt concerns about the spreading blaze.

A brush fire that ignited in Inwood Hill Park in Manhattan’s northern tip has been contained by fire officials after spreading across a significant portion of the park. The fire broke out just days after similar fires in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and New Jersey created smoke that blanketed New York City. Approximately 140 emergency responders, including specialized marine and brush fire units, were mobilized to combat the flames. The cause of the fire is still unknown, but it does not appear to be suspicious. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.

The Fire Department was alerted to the fire around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, prompting a swift response to tackle the blaze. Thick clouds of orange and yellow smoke billowed from the woods, prompting officials to advise nearby residents to close their windows and steer clear of the affected area. A video shared by Mark Levine, the Manhattan borough president, captured the intensity of the fire as it engulfed sections of the park.

This incident is part of a concerning trend of increased brush fires and wildfires in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut due to dry weather conditions and strong winds. New York City’s fire commissioner, Robert S. Tucker, disclosed that the Fire Department has responded to over 225 brush fires since late October.

Inwood Hill Park’s brush fire underscores the importance of prompt and coordinated responses to such emergencies to prevent injuries and property damage. It serves as a reminder for residents to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions during fire-prone conditions.
