In a sunny morning in August, Central Park was bustling with activity as children played, dogs frolicked, and a bunny peeked out from a hedge near the Great Lawn. The actors Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler were there, exploring the park and preparing for their roles in the upcoming Broadway production of “Romeo + Juliet.” As they walked through the park, they didn’t anticipate falling in love, but little did they know that they would soon discover how to portray their characters’ deep and passionate love on stage.

Both Connor, 20, and Zegler, 23, are set to make their Broadway debuts in the iconic play, where they will portray the star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet. Despite the daunting task of bringing a centuries-old story to life in a new and captivating way, the actors are excited about the challenge.

“It should be fun,” Connor remarked, although he couldn’t hide his nerves. Zegler gave him a knowing look and assured him, “It will be fun.”

The actors, who had never met before being cast in the production, were brought together by director Sam Gold, with music by Jack Antonoff. They had agreed to take on the roles without the usual chemistry read, but their instant connection was evident from the moment they met at the Circle in the Square Theater in March.

As they sipped coffee at the Cosmic Diner, the actors discussed their approach to the characters and the play. With previews set to begin on September 26, the pressure is on for Connor and Zegler to breathe new life into the tragic love story and captivate audiences night after night on Broadway.
