Living Off the Grid in Manhattan: Is It Possible?

Achieving sustainability requires commitment, solar panels, and a plant-based diet. It may also involve prioritizing environmental efforts over dating.

Living off the grid is a dream for many, but for Joshua Spodek, it has become a reality. In May 2022, he disconnected his Greenwich Village apartment from the electrical grid as an experiment to see if he could live off the grid for a year. Fast forward two and a half years later, he is still off the grid and has written a book that offers solutions to environmental problems.

Joshua Spodek, a 53-year-old executive coach and former professor, has been living off the grid in his studio apartment in New York City. To power his daily essentials like his laptop, cellphone, and Instant Pot pressure cooker, he relies on four solar panels and a 17-pound battery. Every day, he carries these items up and down 11 flights of stairs to his roof for charging, as taking the elevator would be considered cheating in terms of electricity usage. The entire setup cost him approximately $700, purchased from Craigslist.

Living off the grid in a bustling city like New York is no easy feat, but Joshua Spodek has managed to make it work for over two years. His commitment to sustainability and reducing his environmental impact has inspired many to consider alternative energy sources and ways to live more eco-friendly lifestyles.
