Federal prosecutors are considering charges against Luigi Mangione that may carry the death penalty.
The suspect accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare’s CEO on a Manhattan sidewalk will now be facing federal charges in addition to the state murder charges. Luigi Mangione, 26, was indicted on three murder charges by the Manhattan district attorney’s office, with two of them labeling him as a terrorist. The federal charges, to be brought by the U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York, could potentially include the death penalty, which is not allowed in New York state. The decision on seeking the death penalty would likely be made by the Justice Department after President-elect Donald J. Trump assumes office. If convicted in state court, Mangione could face life in prison without parole. The state case will proceed alongside the federal case, with prosecutors aiming to secure justice for the victim, Brian Thompson, through charges of first-degree murder.
