Experience the magic of Dr. Honeybrew starting his day with music, brewing Turkish coffee in hot sand, and welcoming guests into his home.
Uluç Ülgen, also known as Dr. Honeybrew, is a Turkish coffee grounds reader based in New York City. Born in Istanbul and raised in Minnesota, Ülgen moved to New York in 2012 in search of new opportunities. His unique coffee-grounds reading ceremonies, which he describes as “theatrical fortunetelling experiences that blend magic, music, and soothsaying,” take place in his East Village apartment.
Ülgen’s readings, which he started in 2019 as a way to honor his late father’s Turkish heritage, have gained popularity among New Yorkers seeking a different kind of fortune-telling experience. He credits his success to his colorful style of fortune reading and his impressive track record of accuracy. To date, Ülgen has read over 9,000 coffee cups for guests who visit his home on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Living with his fiancée, Amy Shamblen, a graphic designer, and their two Shih Tzus, Tokaji and Szuka, Ülgen cherishes the sense of community that his readings bring. He believes that his guests not only receive insights into their futures but also form connections with each other during the intimate and emotional readings.
Ülgen’s day typically starts at 8 a.m. with the soothing sounds of Amy’s alarm clock, followed by a cup of Americano made with her Rocket Espresso machine. Despite his background as a Turkish coffee fortune teller, Ülgen enjoys the taste of Americano brewed by his fiancée. After a quick walk with their dogs, Ülgen begins his day preparing for the readings that await him in his living room.
As Dr. Honeybrew, Ülgen offers a unique and engaging fortune-telling experience that combines tradition with a modern twist. His passion for bringing people together through the art of coffee grounds reading has made him a beloved figure in the New York City community.
