New domestic TKTS outpost opens outside New York amid concerns over rising ticket prices and theater economics.
TKTS, a well-known theater discount service that has been a fixture in Times Square for over five decades, is making its debut in Philadelphia. This expansion comes at a time when regional theaters are facing challenges, and ticket prices continue to be a concern for consumers. The new TKTS booth will be located inside the Independence Visitor Center in Philadelphia’s historic district, marking the first TKTS booth in an American city outside of New York. Similar booths can be found in London and Tokyo, and there is a second one in New York at Lincoln Center.
The Philadelphia TKTS booth will offer discounted tickets for local theater, dance, and music productions, as well as for some touring Broadway shows. These tickets will be discounted by 30 to 50 percent and can be purchased up to 72 hours before the show (compared to a shorter purchase window in New York). The Independence Visitor Center, a popular tourist destination near attractions like the Liberty Bell, attracted 1.3 million visitors last year and already sells tickets for other activities. The TKTS kiosk will operate daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., starting on Thursday.
The decision to bring TKTS to Philadelphia was driven by Visit Philadelphia, a tourism marketing agency, in response to concerns about ticket prices limiting access to arts and culture events. Angela Val, the president and CEO of Visit Philadelphia, emphasized the importance of ensuring that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, has the opportunity to experience theater and cultural activities. Over 20 presenting organizations will participate in the TKTS program, including Ensemble Arts Philly, which offers music, dance, comedy, and theater performances in three venues, as well as the top regional theaters in the city – Arden Theater Company, Philadelphia Theater Company, and Wilma Theater. Additionally, renowned institutions like the Philadelphia Orchestra, Philadelphia Ballet, and BalletX will also offer discounted tickets through the TKTS booth.
