Man fatally shot in Midtown Manhattan was a former top executive at a major insurance company.
Brian R. Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, tragically lost his life in a targeted killing in Midtown Manhattan. The 50-year-old executive had spent over two decades climbing the corporate ladder at one of the nation’s top insurance companies while balancing family life in Maple Grove, Minnesota with his wife Paulette and their two sons, Dane and Bryce.
The perpetrator behind the shooting, captured on security footage released by the New York Police Department, remains at large as authorities work to uncover the motive for this senseless act. Mr. Thompson and his colleagues were in New York for an annual investors’ meeting at the time of the incident.
In April 2021, Mr. Thompson was appointed as the chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, where he oversaw a workforce of approximately 140,000 employees. His career at the company began in 2004, and prior to his promotion, he led the division responsible for managing the company’s government insurance business, which included Medicaid and Medicare plans.
UnitedHealthcare’s Medicare Advantage plans, a key revenue stream driven by the growing number of aging baby boomers entering retirement, had positioned the company as the largest provider of such plans in the United States. The success of these private insurance policies had contributed significantly to the company’s overall profitability.
The sudden and tragic loss of Brian R. Thompson has left a void not only within UnitedHealthcare but also in the broader business community. As investigations into his death continue, his legacy as a dedicated and accomplished leader in the insurance industry will be remembered by all who knew him.
