A Fire Smoldering Across From Upper Manhattan.

Wildfires Rampant in New Jersey and Connecticut with No Signs of Abating

Firefighters in two states fight hundreds of fires during unusually dry autumn.

Wildfires have been ravaging New Jersey, with a recent blaze in the Palisades threatening nearby suburbs and prompting a statewide smoke advisory. The fire, which had consumed 39 acres, was partially contained by Friday afternoon. This incident is just one of many brush fires that have erupted in the region due to a deepening drought.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service has been battling numerous fires, including three major blazes in southern New Jersey that collectively spanned over 840 acres. These fires have necessitated evacuations and road closures, underscoring the severity of the situation. Chief Bill Donnelly of the forest fire service expressed concerns about the continuing challenges posed by the ongoing fires.

The National Weather Service has issued red flag warnings for areas experiencing gusty winds and low humidity, creating conditions conducive to wildfires. These warnings have been recurrent across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, emphasizing the need for caution with potential fire sources such as cigarettes and grills. New Jersey, in particular, is facing extreme fire risk due to a severe drought affecting most of the state.

As wildfires continue to pose a threat to communities and natural areas in New Jersey, it is crucial for residents to stay informed, follow safety guidelines, and take proactive measures to prevent fires.
